Don’t forget to get your Flu Shot

One of the nice things IBM does for its employees is to provide flu shots for free.

While standing in line earlier today to get my flu shot, I mentioned to the man next to me that when our family lived in New York City our pediatrician one said that he was proud that he had been a member of the team of doctors who first gave flu shots to all the children in the New York City school system, back in the early 50’s.

My fellow IBMer said he never knew his mother because she had died when he was only three.

She died over fifty years ago. She was the last person in Westchester County to die of polio . (Westchester today has over a million residents.)

When I repeated this story to another man standing in line, he said that as a child he heard sirens several times a week from ambulances going to homes with people stricken by polio.

So shots can matter.

The flu virus changes each year so you need to get a flu shot each year.

If you haven’t yet gotten your flu shot for this year then please do so soon.
