Installing Lotus Symphony on Ubuntu

I wrote a post on installing Lotus Symphony on Windows XP a week ago. I’m in the midst of writing another on how to install Lotus Symphony on Ubuntu. However, I recently came across a post on that topic that I want to bring to your attention: Oliver Meyer’s Installing The IBM Lotus Symphony Beta 1 Office Suite On Ubuntu 7.04.

This is the best post I’ve seen yet on this topic. While I do plan write my own post, I’ve noticed recently that because of my prior post on the Windows install and my many posts about Ubuntu, search engines are sending folks to this blog who just want to install Symphony on Ubuntu. So I’m writing this post to save them –and perhaps you — time.

My plan was to confirm that his approach works before resuming my post, but I just realized that odds are that it indeed does, so why should you have to wait?

If you do try to install Symphony using his instructions and it doesn’t work, then please post a comment here and I will then move completing that post to the top of my stack, a stack which is quite full of other more pressing matters just now.

Thing is, my initial experience trying to install Symphony on Ubuntu was so frustrating that I then took time out to write the Dave Shields On Package Management: Apt-Get It or For-get It and Why Ubuntu? It uses apt-get to manage packages posts.

I then wrote a couple of personal posts, including one about the “Three Dave Shields’s” on the web that had a footnote about movie theaters in my hometown, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Following that I found a site that had pictures of the theaters I attended as a child and then realized I am probably one of the few — if not only — active bloggers who can speak to this issue with some authority, or at least with with great affection. So I then started writing a post on “Movie Theaters in Albuquerque in the 1950’s.”

But people who want to install Symphony on Ubuntu don’t really care about those bygone days, hence this post.

Then again, if you want to install Symphony on Ubuntu so you can learn more about the Kimo theater, the Sunshine theater, or the El Rey theater, not to mention my recollection of waiting in line to watch “Superman and the Mole Men” in the early 50’s, then I’m your guy.
